Every year, about 11,000 people accidentally drive their cars into rivers and lakes. If this happens to you: The car should float for a few moments. Take this opportunity to lower the window and exit through it. Do not try to open the door -- water pressure will probably keep it from opening. If you partially open it, entering water will sink the car rapidly. If the window won't open, wait for the interior of the car to gradually fill with water up to your neck. At that point, water pressure will equalize on both sides of the door and it will open easily. Open the door and push yourself out.
