#1 - Mr.
Robot |
|

by Moonpod
|
If you are one of the many who have been waiting for
Moonpod''s second game, following the 2003 Game of the
Year Starscape, your wait is over. I recommend immediately
buying the game on CD as you''ll want to keep a copy of this one
around indefinitely. Mr. Robot is a strange mix of a pseudo sokoban
played isometric-ly and a super cool RPG that feels futuristic and
retro all at the same time. It''s all glued together with an
immediately engaging storyline, cool upgrades, items and weapons
that make the combat feel anything but repetitive. The music is
solid, the visuals are top notch (the screenshots do no justice)
and the game is worth every minute of time it will suck from your
life. The only negative is the somewhat too loose control of the
robot, that despite my tweaking of the controls still left me
occasionally frustrated as I missed jumps over and over again.
It''s a pretty minor annoyance after you get some good play in, and
it wasn''t enough to dampen my enthusiasm for this amazing
game.

A really solid and original puzzle
game. The emotions work out as a really interesting aspect to
the puzzles, and the physics-y nature of it all makes the
puzzles a little more lenient and freeform than you get in
more tile-based puzzles. It''s also got a completely random
and really strange style - radioactive ginseng? - and very
nice cartoon graphics. Each set of levels introduces really
new elements. A trophy room, level editor, and downloadable
puzzles round it out with tons of juicy goodness to chew
on.

by Tiny Hero Studios
|
Can it be? An indie strategy
game with an actual single player campaign?! Each of the eight
playable races requires distinctively different strategies; each
mission teaches you something new. With only four units per race I
initially thought this may be turn based strategy oversimplified -
but actually this allows you to predict and plan your movement to
an extremely accurate degree. The well laid out GUI puts all
relevant information at your fingertips. Highly recommended.

#4 - Weird
Worlds: Return To Infinite Space |
|

by Digital Eel
|
Digital Eel has taken
SAIS
and reworked every single part of it to be prettier and more
intuitive. It''s kind of a card game based in space but with
cool real-time fight scenes. There is something truly addictive
about trying to score a warp unit, weapons, allies, and
exploring/beating the hell out of everything. I''ve played it a
ton and I''m still seeing new things, for instance, there is a
ship thief who can actually be captured if you hold the correct
item. Must play one more game.

I had mixed feelings about the control
scheme at first, but it grew on me as I played. It''s like a sort
of Death Rally adventure game. You drive your car around and fight
bandits, smugglers, and other not so nice people. Vaguely, I''m
reminded of the movie Once Upon a Time in Mexico, just due to all
the killing and the whole Mexico thang. The music is great and
really sets the tone, as few indie games have soundtracks with
actual vocals in it. Sure, you could nitpick; but it''s quite a
unique game, and I really enjoyed playing it.

Holy Majumbo! An awesome looking 2D
shooter, with one of the finest game soundtracks I''ve heard in a
long time. Ok, the soundtracks by Machinae Supremacy, and I
am a bit of a fan of their music, so I''m totally biased. :D. The
killing is satisfying, not to sound uncivilized. It''s great to
watch enemy aircraft dive into obstacles, enemy soldiers, or
chemical waste bins (drugs!?), in turn causing explosions and more
chaos. Main beef is it''s INCREDIBLY HARD! Beating the first level
on medium was a task best left to insane shmup-a-holics, which
makes me wonder who hard difficulty is for. It sports beautiful
particle effects (if not overly used), awesome production values,
and did I mention I really like the soundtrack?

|
This game is amazing! There
are 100 levels and except a few standard breakout type
standouts, they''re all totally unique and weird. I had a
tremendous problem pulling myself away because I just wanted
to see one more level. In addition, I will just mention one
other wonderful innovation this brings to the genre: the
Graviton. That alone injects so much skill and play
improvement, I expect it will be a breakout standard within 6
months. It also does wonders for "Last Brick Syndrome", which
is a terrible ailment of such games. Okay, one more comment:
great balance - levels are all just the right length, no
insta-quickies, no drawn out boredom. So very very close to a
10.

This is one of the more thoroughly entertaining indie
games this year, and it is so well put together it doesn''t even
resemble an indie game. This one is another definite buy! It plays
something like Roller Coaster Tycoon meets Space Station Manager,
and comes off better than either of those two games in many ways.
Top it off with great humor throughout and it left me going back
and forth on whether or not to give it a perfect score. Either way
you should own this game!

Generally speaking I''m not a fan of
shooting gallery games, they''re usually tedious after only a few
minutes and lack the variety needed to keep me interested. However,
GDN is a game that has kept my interest from the minute it was
released until the last time I played it (just moments before
writing this). The graphics are slick, the controls are precise but
forgiving, and the sound and music is great. It also helps that the
games'' developer spent time of making sure you''re pulled into the
world in a believable way. I''m not ashamed to admit that the first
few times I received [messages] in-game I thought it was real. I.
Love. This. Game.

Chromadrome |

by Alpha 72 Games
|
When I saw the screenshot for this I
dreaded having to play it. Sure, the graphics are decent enough,
but it really didn''t look that interesting. So, as I sit here
eating a big plate of crow I have to say that Chromadrome is an
insanely fun title that will have you, and anyone that watches you
play it, wincing at the nail biting moves you pull off. The levels
can be extremely difficult, but are not too frustrating once you
find the best paths to follow. The game appears to have some great
replay value in that increasing the ball speed really changes how
you tackle different areas. I couldn''t bring myself to give
Chromadrome a 10 because the menus lack any polish, the music is
annoying (although you can load your own), and it''s difficult to
tell exactly when you''re going to fall because just getting too
close will send you over, but if this game were polished up a bit
it could be a contender for game of the year.

#15 - ZSX3:
Ninjastarmageddon! |

by Ska Software
|
An over-the-top story matched up with equally
over-the-top gameplay makes Zombie Smashers X3:
Ninjastarmageddon one of the best original games to hit the
indie market. Old-school gamers might find similarities of
ZSX3 to Zone Raiders or the original Quarantine,
in which the game has a constant pace that''s always edging on
the brink of total chaos. Whether it''s making delivers or
blasting down foes, this game rocks hard in a very smooth way.
The play controls took a little adjusting to, but the tutorial
was a great help and after a while I found the flying/shooting
mechanics to mirror the very likes of Battlefront II''s space
segments, including the spins, rolls and quick loop-d-turns.
There''s a lot to like about Zombie Smashers X3, from the nice
weapon selection to the almost Fifth Element-style
flying vehicles and space stations, this game was made to
entertain and it does it oh so well.

Visually, it''s great. A unique arcade
sprite graphics style blended together with glows, particle

sharp digital blips, beeps, honks, and an evil computer voice

it''s a great game. No, it''s not the huge 200,000 hour monster 3D

Reflexive does to the Bejeweled

historically single player casual game and making it multiplayer on

The guys at Large Animal know how to
put a game together, and they have put this one together

gameplay of taking pictures is very fun, and the

there just ain''t nothing wrong with this game. I wouldn''t

well. There are some cool graphics, especially in Minter mode, but
the game is really all about the CONSTANT action that keeps you

rewards for being daring enough to go after the gold while

PeaceMaker |

by Impact Games
|
People through the years have probably wondered why
diplomats haven''t been able to bring about a Middle-East peace
accord between Israel and Palestine. PeaceMaker illustrates the
difficulties in remarkable detail. The game makes you the leader of
either state and tasks you with not only maintaining the
status-quo, but improving things for both Israel and Palestine.
It''s unbelievably difficult to accomplish and I never was able to.
If one of the two nations gets too disgruntled, the game ends in
war and you lose. For every positive action you make on one end,
there''s seemingly a negative one on the other. When you hold out
the olive branch of peace, it''s smacked away by the other side;
and just when things seem to be going well, some radical faction
uses terrorism to disrupt things. If you enjoy political
simulations, want to understand more of the politics of that
region, or are an educator, PeaceMaker is definitely worth looking

Mr. Smoozles Goes Nutso is an adventure game that
features more depth than you might first give it credit for.

I just have a nice positive feeling about this
game. It''s unique, engrossing, and ultimately pointless.

The Clash''N Slash games play like a slower paced
Crimsonland in
space. This is very polished with lots of levels and beautiful
art...

Crimsonland is
often looked at as the best of these types of games, but I have to
say that RIP: Strike
Back is certainly my favorite.

Well, it''s like The Incredible Machine, that is,
if The Incredible Machine was about radioactive balls in pipes.

M.O.M. is a role playing game that tries to be all things to all
players. Single party, multi-party, single player, massively
multiplayer (no monthly fees!), mix and match whatever you

A rather intriguing sandbox game. Though it plays
nothing like it, the game does remind me of Black and White. On
that note, unless I''m totally oblivious to some easy strategy,
it''s not an easy game to win. I had to drop my difficulty to
"easy" within a few levels to actually progress further. On the
other hand, like Black and White, the game provides a good
environment to just "goof around" and not care about winning. The
only downside to playing this way, is you still need to win if you
want to unlock the more animals. Interesting
game.

Knight (Kishi Kawaii) |

by Hanako Games

After seeing six of the possible fifty
endings of Hanako Game''s latest anime styled game I can say with
some certainty that the mechanics behind this unique dating
sim/dungeon crawler hybrid are motivating enough to keep you
playing. There are a lot of interesting decisions; you sin by
killing a rat or selling your body which means no free bed at the
church. However, you can be absolved by cleaning pews - but this
will make you more homely which will hurt your social life of
course. Gripes: Looks a bit NES era, needs a way to click-skip the
slowish "7 day working" sequences at will. Cool randomly generated
dungeons.

The Goalkeeper does a nice job of simulating a
single role, the goalie.

The concept of a dungeon crawling word game has
been done before (Dungeon
Scroll), but Pentagraph''s tight focus and structuring
makes it stand out.
- Greg Micek |

Once you get close and start executing insanely
fancy maneuvers the game gets much more interesting.

Gaming enthusiasts, developers, or anyone that appreciates the
finer details of technology should dig this. It''s not perfect, but
it doesn''t have to be.

- Trash |

by Inhuman Games

Ahh, the long awaited Trash. It''s a solid RTS at
it''s core, played in a control scheme like Starcraft (right click
action). Just to be clear, this game is all about the multiplayer.
The single player mode is just a plain skirmish, and doesn''t offer
any depth or means to learn or get in to the back story. No, it''s
up to you to just *know* that humans and mutants are battling for
what''s left of the world... which is mostly populated trash. It''s
an intriguing concept that the primary resource is junk, meaning
dead things can be recycled. Neato.
