How to Buy Cheap College Textbooks

Things You’ll Need:

  • internet
  • list of books you need you buy
  • Books' information (title, author, ISBN number, and etc)

Step1
College campus bookstores are not cheap, although they definitely carry the book you need and its a very convenient way to buy books. The most effective way in which you can avoid campus bookstore is by planning out your schedule early. Don't wait until the last minute to get books because buying used college textbook will usually take lots of searching.

Step2
Always check the school forum for textbooks that the students are trying to sell themselves. Not only will you find cheap textbooks there but also gains a valuable insight into the class by asking the seller about the class' difficulty. If you are really lucky, the seller might even give you his/her notes.

Step3
Search online for your book, they can be cheaper then your college campus bookstore. It's easier to search for books online by ISBN number (International Standard Book Number) instead of the book name or book author. Useful websites include: www.ecampus.com www.collegeswapshop.com www.bigwords.com www.cheapcollege.com www.bookbye.com www.valorebooks.com

Step4
When buying online, it is better to buy in bundles as that will save you shipping.

Step5
Consider used college textbooks instead of new ones. They are usually a lot cheaper. If it's possible you can rent textbooks as well.

Step6
If your friends are taking the same class, you guys can just buy one copy of the book and share it. This is every cost effective when more people are sharing the same book.

Step7
Check for older edition of the book online; usually the older editions are not so much different but they are at a significantly lower price then the current edition.

Step8
Don't forget about international editions of the book. It is often paperback and cheaper, but content is usually the same.

Step9
You can buy an electronic version of the book. They cannot be resold, but are significantly cheaper then a new book.

  • Sometimes, you don't even need to purchase the textbook because the library has several copies on hand that you can borrow for short term.
  • If everything fails and you don't have the money (or just don't want) to buy textbooks. Chances are you can get away with not having the book. In my experience, some professor think textbooks are reference tools that are not always necessary.
