Spears, 25, and Federline, 29, were granted joint custody of sons Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, after their divorce last July.

But in a closed session, Judge Scott Gordon ordered the troubled pop star to hand over the two boys and ruled that Federline would "retain physical custody ... until further notice of the court".

TMZ.com dubbed her the "popwreck" and slammed Spears for going out just hours after the verdict under the headline "Smiling Brit out and about after losing kids - WTF?!".

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton wrote: “Britney Spears lost custody of her two children on Monday because she’s a f***-up that can’t obey the law.”

“What planet does she live on????"

The self-proclaimed "Queen of all media" ruled: "Her brazen disregard for the law is disgusting. Thankfully the judge gave her a check mate by taking her kids away. Game over, Britney.”

Commentators in the US print media have been similarly damning.

Jo Piazza, a reporter for the NY Daily News, which anointed the fallen pop star “Unfitney”, said: “It's official: Britney Spears is Hollywood's worst mother - ever.”

Spears' maternal downfall has inspired cries of Mommy Dearest and prompted comparisons with other Hollywood parenting scandals. The LA Times includes the likes of Michael Jackson, Joan Crawford, Alec Baldwin and Woody Allen on its Hollywood walk of parenting shame.

The sharp-tongued Andrea Peyser wrote in the New York Post: “A Family Court commissioner has ruled - and about time - that shameless, panty-less, gum-snapping, head-shaving, alcohol-swilling, drug-seeking pop slut Britney Spears is unfit to raise grass, let alone kids.”

Britney's colourful behaviour has attracted criticism

Ms Peyser concludes: “Is there hope for Britney? That's hard to say. She's been given so many chances and selfishly blown them all, seeking self-gratification over any semblance of maternal exhibitionism.

"It's time for K-Fed to step up to the plate. And for Britney to stay away - far away. “

In her most tumultuous year since shooting to fame, the one-time squeaky clean teen star got divorced, was dropped by her lawyer and management company and was photographed apparently drunk and out of control. She was caught shaving her head, dipped repeatedly in and out of rehab and was even captured on camera without her underwear.

But things aren’t all bad for the former Mickey Mouse Club member: Perez Hilton reports today that the Oops! I did it again singer finally got a valid driver’s license.

And a core of loyal fans has come to Spears' defence on her MySpace page, sending messages of support. Brooke vowed: "I will forever have faith in you and love you and your music!"

Spears is expected to release an as-yet-untitled album in November.

Despite, or perhaps because of her recent high-profile personal problems and a stagnant performance at last month's MTV Video Music Awards, where critics slammed her for "sleep walking through her performance", Spears’ new single Gimme More is topping the iTunes music download list.

News that a judge has ordered Britney Spears to turn over custody of her two young sons to her ex-husband Kevin Federline has elicited scant sympathy for the pop starlet from the blogosphere.
